FROM SHY AND INTROVERTED TO HELPING OTHERS
For Dave Fraser, his journey with Scientology began with one book.
Someone gave him a copy of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health to read, and he was intrigued by what it might offer. At the time, he was particularly conscious of his shyness.
“I thought, if this works, I need it to get rid of my shyness,” he recalls.
But in looking back at it, Dave says that the changes went way beyond simply becoming more confident and assured.
“I’m happier, more aware and confident than I’ve ever been,” he says. “I have a certainty on life that was missing when I was younger.”
The increased confidence has also changed the way that he deals with difficult situations. Instead of allowing past failures to influence how he tackles new situations, he says that he has learned to look at each situation newly and on its own terms.
“I can look at situations without carrying the past failures into it and have tools to deal with the situations in a sensible way,” he explains.
But the most rewarding aspect of discovering the Scientology religion is the practical tools it offers in helping others.
“When they smile and say that things are better for them,” he says he enjoys the most. Dave has been counselling people using the techniques in Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and helping people with Scientology for over 40 years.
One example was a friend living abroad who was going through a difficult period. He was unhappy, unemployed and had been left feeling discouraged after his previous job had indicated that it wanted younger people.
Dave suggested that his friend try Self Analysis, a Scientology book designed to help people gain greater understanding of themselves.
The results, Dave says, were major.
“He started using the book and became much more confident and happy,” Dave recalls.
His friend’s circumstances subsequently changed dramatically. He secured a contract in Australia, followed by another contract in Germany, and is now doing well.
For Dave, experiences like this reinforce his belief that a lack of confidence can be one of the biggest barriers preventing people from reaching their potential. And he now dedicates a lot of his time helping people to discover their potential and how to be more confident.
“Lack of confidence and worries about making mistakes can stop people from trying for what they really want”, he says.
One principle Dave particularly values from Scientology is the Affinity, Reality, Communication triangle. With this basic principle of Scientology he can not only help others but he uses it in everyday life as a valuable tool for understanding people and improving relationships.
(What is the ARC triangle)
“I find that using Affinity, Reality and Communication is incredibly useful, not just for helping people but in life in general,” he says.
For anyone who currently feels stuck or lacks confidence, Dave recommends starting with communication.
“Start with a communication course like I did,” he says, followed by a Dianetics seminar, which he believes can give people “a taste of what’s possible when you find out how to remove the things that hold you back.”
For Dave, the journey that began with a book and a desire to overcome shyness has ultimately become something bigger: gaining confidence in his own life and finding satisfaction in helping other people discover what they are capable of.
