Straight A Student, Adelina Kormany, Says How Study Technology Helped Her Succeed at School and on the Competition Floor
For Adelina Kormany, school wasn’t always easy. “Going to school wasn’t always smooth sailing,” she says.
With Scientology Study Technology she has learned to approach success in both the classroom and on the competition floor with the same basic principle: understand what you are doing, prepare thoroughly, and keep yourself in control of the situation.
Adelina recently achieved straight A’s in her exams while also competing successfully in competitive baton twirling.
She says that Scientology Study Technology has played an important role in the way she studies, prepares and performs. For Adelina, studying is not just about memorising information. It is about achieving a full understanding of what she is studying so she can then use the information in life.
A very important part of her success is understanding the words connected with the subject.
“I believe that if you don’t clear your words, you won’t study faster,” she says. “You won’t even read faster. Your mind—even if you’re not aware of it—will be running circles around what you have not fully understood.”
TURNING DIFFICULT CONCEPTS INTO SOMETHING SHE CAN SEE
Another principle of Study Technology that she uses is the importance of having the mass (actual physical object or a reasonable substitute) of what you’re studying. Studying without having the mass of what you’re studying can make it extremely difficult.
Physics provides one example of how Adelina applies the methods she has learned. When she encountered ideas that were hard to imagine, she says she would create demonstrations to help herself understand them fully. Rather than simply accepting a definition, she wanted to be able to picture the concept and see how it worked. That understanding then helped her recognise and apply the same principles she was learning in new situations.
“Being able to imagine a concept fully made me able to apply it anywhere,” she explains. “I found some examples in life, and that practice made me instantly recognise any exam question and find the correct technique promptly to solve it.”
For Adelina, the point was not just getting through one Physics question and not just passing exams. Once she understood the basic idea and really grasped it, she was then able to recognise it again when it appeared in a different form. She says this approach also changed the way she dealt with difficult or exhausting study sessions.
Scientology Study Technology teaches about the three Barriers to Study - Absence of Mass, Too Steep a Gradient and - most importantly - the Misunderstood Word. Each of these barriers can prevent understanding a subject.
“Whenever I felt tired, I simply looked back and found the words I didn’t understand. That’s literally all it was.”
If she came across a word or concept she had not fully understood, she would investigate it further and learn what it meant. The result, she says, was often an improved ability to concentrate.
“Suddenly I was energetic again and ready to study, or I had another few words to understand, then I continued flying across the materials with the previous speed or even faster.”
APPLYING THE METHODS ACROSS SUBJECTS
Adelina says the same approach proved useful across all of her subjects.
Spanish was particularly successful. She achieved 100% in the subject, and her headteacher, who was also her Spanish teacher, repeatedly told her how proud he was of her results.
When he asked what she had done differently, Adelina explained the study methods she had been applying.
“He was quite surprised with some of them and said he’d recommend it to people in the class,” she recalls.
TAKING PREPARATION ONTO THE BATON-TWIRLING FLOOR
Adelina’s application of these ideas does not stop when she leaves school.
Baton twirling requires extensive physical practice, but she believes that understanding is just as important.
“Even though training in dance is mainly practice, without understanding it will never stay in your head,” she says.
She worked with her coaches to learn routines on a gradient—taking them step by step, with each new part following naturally from the previous one. She also made a point of learning the names of movements so that she would immediately know what her coaches meant when they talked about part of the routine.
“I always made sure to learn my routines by asking my coaches to give me everything on a gradient—simply step by step, concise enough for it to follow on from the previous step.”
Preparation also happened outside formal training sessions. Whenever possible, Adelina says she would wake early and practise before school, applying what she learned in The Way to Happiness, a book by L. Ron Hubbard—Be Competent. For Adelina, however, the value of Study Technology extends beyond exam preparations.
“Study technology and knowledge of the mind through Scientology is really something that I will keep revisiting and reminding myself to use, apply and share,” she says. “It’s essential in every area of life, it’s priceless and has endless value in any field.”
